[recto, 1] Hail, Lord, hail, sun of righteousness, he who [2] rises up over the entire earth and over the land of Egypt! [3] You will come down upon this honey, you will give to it the (?) … of the [4] twelve powers and their sweetness [5] too — (⟨add⟩ the usual) — in the name of your great [6] archangel, Abrax, the one whose hand [7] is spread out over his rays: you will open [8] my heart! O Lord, hail, Seth, Thiōth, [9] Barbariōth! I give thanks to you, [10] O god of Deiōdēndea, [11] Iaōth! O, Lord, hail, O Father! O Lord, hail [12] O Son! O Lord, hail, O Holy Spirit! [13] O Lord, hail, O pillar [14] ⟨of⟩ light, which has come upon me! [15] O Lord, Hail, O light of gladness, light [16] of the aeons, light of joy, light [17] ⟨of⟩ my eyes, lamp of my body! O God of Iaō, [18] God of Sabaoth, you shall dip [19] your writing pen in your ink, and you will write [20] upon my tongue — (⟨add⟩ the usual) — you will give to me the sun [21] like a garment, ⟨you will give to me⟩ {the moon} the moon and I will clothe myself with it [22] like a coat! You will give to me the boat [23] of the sun so that he will steer me through all evil! [24] You will give to me the seven stars! You will give to me [25] the equipment of the stars! I will be worthy ⟨to⟩ behold your face, [26] O God! [verso, 1] You will give to me also the glory of the sun, he of the great number, so that it will [2] guard me from all evil— (⟨add⟩ the usual) — yea, for I adjure you [3] by ⟨the⟩ power of Khabarakh, Riniskhir, Phunerō, Phōntel, [4] Asoumar, Asoumar, those who illuminate the abyss [5] in the evening and the earth in the morning! O Lord, hail, [6, 10-11] 〚Sēth, Iōth, Barioth〛 Sēth, Iōth, Barbariōth! I give thanks to you, O God [7] of Deiodēndeiaōth, Lamaōir, quickly! [8] Serou, Seraled, Rima, Aria, Nouda, [9] Damou, Menou!

Notes:

Recto

1. ⲡⲣⲉ ⲛϯⲕⲉⲟⲟⲩⲥ̣ⲏⲛⲉ For the “sun of righteousness”, cf. Malachi 4.2.
3. ⲉⲕⲉϯⲉϥ̣ⲓ̣ⲏⲧ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲙⲡⲉ This passage poses significant problems for translation, and we are not convinced by any of the proposed understandings to date. ⲉϥ̣ⲓ̣ⲏⲧ seems to be a quality which the invoked being is to give to the honey along with “sweetness” (ϩⲗⲟϭ) mentioned in the next line. Both of these qualities seem to belong to the 12 Powers of the Sun, mentioned in the following line. We are unsure what to make of ⲙⲡⲉ; as van der Vliet suggests, perhaps it is a genitive or object marker and definite article. In the first case, it would be a mistake corrected by ⲇⲓ (=ⲛ-ϯⲓ) in the following line, since the following noun is feminine. In the second case, it would be intended to precede the quality to be given, which the scribe has neglected to copy.

Verso

1. ⲡⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲟϭ ⲙⲯⲏⲫⲟⲥ Meyer follows Römer/Thissen in suggesting that the “great number” is 9999, “the largest number capable of being counted on the fingers of a person’s hands” in the Roman finger-counting system. It might alternatively refer to 365, the number of days of the year and the isopsephistic total of the name ⲁⲃⲣⲁⲥⲁⲝ, associated with the sun.
