1. ⲡⲣⲉ ⲛϯⲕⲉⲟⲟⲩⲥ̣ⲏⲛⲉ For the “sun of righteousness”, cf. Malachi 4.2.
3. ⲉⲕⲉϯⲉϥ̣ⲓ̣ⲏⲧ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲙⲡⲉ This passage poses significant problems for translation, and we are not convinced by any of the proposed understandings to date. ⲉϥ̣ⲓ̣ⲏⲧ seems to be a quality which the invoked being is to give to the honey along with “sweetness” (ϩⲗⲟϭ) mentioned in the next line. Both of these qualities seem to belong to the 12 Powers of the Sun, mentioned in the following line. We are unsure what to make of ⲙⲡⲉ; as van der Vliet suggests, perhaps it is a genitive or object marker and definite article. In the first case, it would be a mistake corrected by ⲇⲓ (=ⲛ-ϯⲓ) in the following line, since the following noun is feminine. In the second case, it would be intended to precede the quality to be given, which the scribe has neglected to copy.

1. ⲡⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲟϭ ⲙⲯⲏⲫⲟⲥ Meyer follows Römer/Thissen in suggesting that the “great number” is 9999, “the largest number capable of being counted on the fingers of a person’s hands” in the Roman finger-counting system. It might alternatively refer to 365, the number of days of the year and the isopsephistic total of the name ⲁⲃⲣⲁⲥⲁⲝ, associated with the sun.
