{"id":34,"date":"2018-11-20T09:14:20","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T09:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/wordpress\/?page_id=34"},"modified":"2025-10-08T14:33:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T12:33:01","slug":"the-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/","title":{"rendered":"The Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>The <em>Corpus of Coptic Magical Formularies <\/em>project (CoMaF) is a three-year research project (2024-2027) based at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aegyptologie.uni-wuerzburg.de\/startseite\/\">Chair of Egyptology<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-wuerzburg.de\/startseite\/\">Julius Maximilian University W\u00fcrzburg<\/a>, funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfg.de\/en\">German Research Foundation (DFG)<\/a>, and a partner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/en\/mageia\/\">DFG Centre for Advanced Studies MagEIA<\/a>. The team is made up of Mark\u00e9ta Preininger (PI), Korshi Dosoo (former PI and external collaborator), Roxanne B\u00e9langer Sarrazin (MagEIA fellow and collaborator), and Sophie-Charlotte Helena Gissat (research assistant).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project focuses on the study of Coptic-language magical manuscripts, texts attesting to non-institutional rituals which provide deep insights into the hopes, fears, and beliefs of individuals living in late antique and early Islamic Egypt (ca. 4th to 12th century CE). The practices to which they attest were used to negotiate the crises of daily life \u2013 disease, social conflicts, and uncertainty about the future \u2013 offering glimpses into the intimate lives of ancient people. They also document the complex cultural, linguistic, and religious exchanges of the time \u2013 interactions between the ancient Egyptian and Greek religious traditions, different forms of Christianity, Judaism, and later Islam \u2013 and provide a perspective into worldviews beyond those represented by elite literary or ecclesiastical texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project has three main goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The publication of a second volume of Coptic magical texts in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/9783111080109\/html?lang=en\"><em>Papyri Copticae Magicae<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The production of focused studies on the language of and ritual processes described in the Coptic magical papyri.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The diffusion of our research, which includes making our work of describing and editing texts available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/manuscripts-search\/\"><em>Kyprianos <\/em>database<\/a>, and through regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/blog\/\">blog posts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/the-podcast\/\">podcasts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is the successor of the older project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/coptic-magical-papyri-vernacular-religion-in-late-antique-and-early-islamic-egypt\/\"><em>Coptic Magical Papyri: Vernacular Religion in Late Roman and Early Islamic Egypt<\/em><\/a>, which ran from 2018 to 2023, and was funded by the&nbsp;<em>Excellent Ideas&nbsp;<\/em>programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/contact-us\/\">contact us<\/a>&nbsp;if you would like to collaborate, receive regular updates, or correct information online or in the <em>Kyprianos<\/em> database.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Corpus of Coptic Magical Formularies project (CoMaF) is a three-year research project (2024-2027) based at the Chair of Egyptology of the Julius Maximilian University W\u00fcrzburg, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), and a partner of the DFG Centre for Advanced Studies MagEIA.
