Heidelberg inv. Kopt. 681 is a sheet of parchment, cut into a long rectangle measuring 29.5cm by 10.9cm. Unlike<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coptic-magic.phil.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/2019\/11\/01\/coptic-amulets-i-a-healing-amulet-to-save-ahmed-from-cold-and-fire\/\"> the healing amulet we looked at in the last post in this series<\/a>, this sheet was not folded nor worn as an amulet. The remaining lines of the parchment contain a spell for the quite the opposite purpose \u2013 a curse. This parchment, dating to the second half of the 10<sup>th<\/sup> century CE, is one of nine manuscripts which Iain Gardner and Jay Johnston (2019) have demonstrated belong to a collection of related texts \u2013 \u201cthe Heidelberg Magical Archive\u201d \u2013 and one of six written by the same scribe, who identifies himself in one of them as the Deacon Iohannes. The element <em>Ar\u014d<\/em> is also found in many of the <em>voces magicae<\/em> listed to the left of the figure, and it is likely that the figure depicted is in fact <em>Ari\u014d<\/em>, called &#8220;the great cherub&#8221;, a type of angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below this spell, two further lines of <em>voces magicae<\/em>, playing yet again on the name <em>Ari\u014d<\/em> are also found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Ari\u014d<\/em>, <em>Arina<\/em>, <em>Ar\u014dma<\/em>, <em>Ar\u014dmana\u0113l<\/em>, <em>Arasa<\/em>, <em>Ar\u014dma\u014d<\/em>, <em>Tharma\u014dth<\/em>, <em>Marmari\u014dth<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ari\u014d<\/em> is described as the \u201cGreat Cherub of The Father Almighty\u201d, and it is by his voice, i.e. his order, that the angel &#8211; &#8220;the great cherub&#8221; <em>Ari\u014d<\/em> &#8211; shall be sent before the person named when the spell is applied to a client. The Archangel Michael is also mentioned, because the client is to receive grace in his presence, and supernatural beings, perhaps Michael and the other angels, are to stand at the client&#8217;s right-hand side, before the angel then completes a host of commands for the client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These commands specify that the client is to receive \u201cgrace\u201d (favour, the general quality of being successful and attractive to others), \u201ca silencing\u201d (of enemies), \u201cpeace\u201d (happiness), \u201csuppression\u201d (of enemies), \u201ca gathering\u201d (perhaps referring to customers at their place of work), \u201clove\u201d, and \u201cevery skill\u201d (perhaps referring to an occupation). All of these positive traits can be brought under the umbrella of \u201cfavour\u201d, for they will ensure that the client\u2019s health, wealth, and relationships remain favourable to them. Important, then, is not only that all of these positive outcomes are listed, but also that the command is given for these to be completed for the client \u201cquickly\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This first spell from this parchment sheet is a fine example of a formulary that would have been used as a \u2018master copy\u2019 by a practitioner of Coptic magic. From this formulary, the practitioner, who was likely the same as the Deacon Iohannes identified by Gardner and Johnston as the scribe who wrote several other manuscripts of \u201cthe Heidelberg Magical Archive\u201d, would have been able to copy this spell, and its accompanying figure, onto another manuscript which would have served as an amulet. This amulet would have had the name of the client inserted where this spell says \u201cso-and-so\u201d, and it could then have been worn by that client, who subsequently received all the forms of favour specified in the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet again, these brief case studies highlight the fascinating insights that can be drawn from just a few lines of Coptic text among a corpus of more than 500 Coptic magical papyri.
