| Notes/Discussion: | The incantation includes a matronym and patronym (or just patronym followed by the name of the paternal grandmother). The name Maḥel is Semitic, perhaps “El gives life” from ḤYY, or “El strikes”, from MḤY. The patronym Šoḥet means “slaughterer” in Hebrew. Immi is a Semitic name, meaning “mother” (Segal, 2000, p. 61). Segal believes there are three generations named here (Segal, 2000, p. 61). Another uncertain reading of the name is: שוחד בר נניה. Perhaps from Hebrew שוחט, “slaughterer”. The matronym may be related to the Semitic goddess Nanay. It is attested as a female name in Geller, 1980, Bowl D; and in Pognon, 1898, Bowl 18, but as a male name in AMB Bowl 4 (Segal, 2000). |
