Collection History:

Bought by Urbain Bouriant at Nag’ el-Mashayikh for the Bibliothèque de l’lnstitut
français d’archéologie orientale du Caire in winter of 1892-1893. According to Chassinat’s report of what U. Bourriant reported to him, villagers of Girga found a brick chamber near the village of Nag’ el-Mashayikh. Getting rid of the soil, on the floor of the chamber they discovered a sealed clay jar, this manuscript within it. The villagers had the intention of selling the obejcts. Bouriant was passing through the Luxor area, when he by chance saw some parts of the manuscripts. Having realised that it is a Coptic medical text, he pressed the man who gave him a section of the manuscript to bring him the rest and to tell him the story of the discovery, which has been described above. Bouriant then obtained this entire manuscript and a sheet of papyrus containing alchemical recipes on both sides (Chassinat 1921: p. 1-2). Bouriant had the intention of publishing the manuscript, but he passed away before he could achieve this task. In 1904, his son stated that he wanted to finish his father’s work (Bouriant 1904: p. 29-31). Later, P.A.Debier was to accomplish the task, but only published a description of the manuscript (Debier 1914). Finally, the manuscript was published by Chassinat in 1921 (Chassinat 1921: p. III-XIII).

Notes/Discussion:

With this manuscript, Bourinat acquired a papyrus sheet containing alchemical texts on both sides. It is unclear which manuscript this is (Chassinat 1921: p. 2; Richter 2015L p. 161, note 11).
