| Notes: | 10-11. This is the address, giving the name of the sender and the intended recipient. The x-shape is the locus sigilli, “the place of the seal”. In this case, the letter was not sealed with wax, but, after the letter was folded and tied with string, the x was written across it so that any tampering would be apparent; see Vandorpe 1996, 241-243. |
