[1] [ “… Sa]baōth sits upon (?)… [2] … and he stands with… [3] year (?) … until he sends to me (?) [4] today the [great (?)], mighty archangels, Michael [5] and Gabriel, so that they go to every place in which NN, child of NN, is [6] and fill her heart with every fiery desire [7] and every lust and every passion and every love, and [8] seize her like a fiery flame and bring [9] her to NN, child of NN, yea, yea! I adjure you (pl.) by the [10] wellbeing of your (pl.) great powers and your names so that you [11] disturb all the reason which is in the heart of NN, child of NN! [12] May she be unable to eat and unable to drink and unable to stay [13] in any place until she rises and walks on her [14] feet and comes to NN, child of NN, so that he fulfils the desire of his [15] heart with her, quickly, quickly! Move her heart in a [16] great desire, just as the fire moves you, [17] this is the same way in which I have brought NN, child of NN, to NN, child of NN, without [18] delay, yea, yea, quickly, quickly!”

[19] Draw the images on two white (?) Aswan dishes. Write the prayer and the image on what you will bring. [20] Draw the man alone. Draw again on paper. An amulet. [21] … of (?) what you will bring. Draw that of the male on the cup, gather (?) [22] … the storage place (?) of (?) the offering. Knead it with ⟨wine of the (?)⟩ first-fruits (?) on (?) [23] what you bring, again, in a cup. Gather drain water. Pound [24] … upon it again in this manner (?). Lift up the male. Pronounce (?) [25] … bind them with fine flax. Smear them with clay, place (?) [26] [them] in the fire. Offering: mastic, agarwood, storax … [27] [what you] bring to the wind (?). You write with saffron upon (?) …

Notes:

1. [± 18ⲥⲁ]ⲃⲁⲱⲑ Bilabel/Grohmann, followed by Frankfurter in Meyer/Smith, plausibly reproduce [ⲡⲉⲑⲣⲟⲛⲟⲥ ⲉⲧⲉⲣⲉⲓⲁⲱ ⲥⲁ]ⲃⲁⲱⲑ, rendering “the throne upon which Iao Sabaoth sits”.
19. ⲅⲣ⧸ ⲛⲉⲍⲱ⧹ⲇ⧸ These instructions seem to describe the creation and manipulation of two two-dimensional figures, one male, on plates, with the two perhaps being bound together with linen. This is similar to other Coptic and Arabic recipes describing the use of effigies to represent the male and female targets of love spells, which are usually brought together, facing one another as part of the ritual; cf. Dosoo 2018, 25-46; Dosoo 2023.
19. ⲉ̅ⲃ̅ ⲉⲥⲕⲱⲧⲉ⧹ⲗ⧸ ⲉⲥⲟⲩⲁⲛ ⲉⲛⲁ⧹ⲗ⧸ For a discussion of the word σκουτέλλιον (“dish”) see van der Vliet 1991, p. 224-225. Parallel phraseology in other texts suggests that this word is more or less synonymous with the Greek πίναξ and the Arabic ṣaḥfa (صحفة), a term in modern Egypt for a broad plate of ca. 30cm in diameter, with raised edges. An example of an object labelled an “Aswan plate” (ⲡⲓⲛⲁⲝ ⲛⲥⲟⲩⲁⲛ) can be found in the British Museum under inventory no. EA 27718 (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/Y_EA27718_1).
19-20, 21, 23. ⲡⲉϣⲁⲕⲛⲧϥ The meaning of the phrase “what you will bring” is obscure; it may refer to an object belonging to the target, known as ousia (“essence”) in Greek. Pieces of hair or fingernails are often used as ousia, but the fact that it must be drawn on would imply a piece of clothing or another intimate possession.
