Apparatus: | 21. ⲟⲩⲥϩⲓⲙⲉ ⲕⲁ ⲙⲟⲩ ⲓⲁⲃⲉ ϩⲁⲣⲟⲥ i.e. Sahidic ⲟⲩ-ⲥϩⲓⲙⲉ ⲉ-ⲕⲁ ⲙⲟⲩ ⲉⲓⲁⲃⲉ ϩⲁⲣⲟ⸗ⲥ (haplography of ⲉ) : translate “a woman – pour (lay) pus water (?) on her” (“Eine Frau – gieße (wtl. lege) Eiterwasser auf sie”) Bilabel/Grohmann |
Notes: | 21. ⲟⲩⲥϩⲓⲙⲉ ⲕⲁ ⲙⲟⲩ ⲓⲁⲃⲉ ϩⲁⲣⲟⲥ This recipe seems to describe one or more curse procedures; the title in l. 7 would seem to describe making a woman leak pus from her vulva; for [ⲙⲟⲩ ⲓⲁ]ⲃⲉ as pus, cf. ⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⲛ̅ⲓⲁⲃⲓ in Crum 76b. The phrase “under her” recalls the common description of uterine bleeding as blood being “under (a woman)”; cf. e.g. Matthew 9.20 “behold, a woman with blood under her for twelve years” (ⲉⲓⲥ ⲟⲩⲥϩⲓⲙⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲣⲉⲡⲉⲥⲛⲟϥ ϣⲟⲟⲡ ϩⲁⲣⲟⲥ ⲙⲙⲛⲧⲥⲛⲟⲟⲩⲥⲉ ⲛⲣⲟⲙⲡⲉ). Cf. the parallel phrase in KYP T217. |
