Classification:

These manuscripts may comprise an “archive”, meaning that they were likely brought together and deposited by an ancient person or persons.

Description:

Two small Coptic amulets written by the same hand for a woman named Anna and her son.

Acquisition:

Both manuscripts were likely acquired through the Deutsches Papyruskartell at some point in the early 20th century, likely at the same time given their similarities and sequential inventory numbers, and from the same findspot (KD 30/11/2020).

Dating:

Since both manuscripts are in the same hand, they must have both been written within the lifetime of the same copyist; the hand is dated to the ninth or tenth century.

Language/dialect:

Both manuscripts contain the same text, written in Sahidic Coptic with Mesokemic features.

Materiality/composition:

Both manuscripts are the same size, and show nearly identical folding patterns (Burns 2014: p. 121).

Content:

Both amulets are applied recipes for healing/protection against heat and cold.
