| Notes: | 4. ⲑⲏⲥⲁⲩⲣⲟⲥ Choat/Gardner understand this as the container into which the ingredients are placed, but note that it might also be the object of the “purification”, perhaps a storeroom. In later Greek magical manuals θησαυρός is used to refer to hidden treasure which may be found using divination (e.g. Delatte p. 441.20, 471.19, 507.13, 18), and the practice of searching for hidden treasure is well-attested in Medieval and Early Modern Egypt; Blackman (p. 188) describes an early 20th century magician purifying the spot where treasure was to be found with water as part of a longer ritual. |
