[7] Concerning the paiše-disease.

“I adjure you, oh angel who obtains [8] grace for every disease that comes upon man, [9] especially this disease, that takes man in its [10] time, may the paiše-disease leave NN, child of NN! Oriel, Gabriel, [11] it is Raphael who entreats, every disease, may NN, child of NN, be healed ⟨of it⟩!”

[12] Blow it over wine.

Notes:

7. ⲡⲁⲓ̇ϣⲉ The paiše-disease seems to be a kind of disease which produced burning pustules on the skin, notably on the face and hands. Till (p. 33) notes that in the Scalae of BNF Copte 43 it is translated in Arabic as حبة ,حب ḥabat or ḥubun, literally “grains” which Bsciai (p. 62) translates as “veneream luem, luem gallica”, both terms for syphilis, although there are apparently no clear attestations of syphilis in Afroeurasia at this time. Rather than translating it, here we simply retain the word transliterated.
7-8. ⲉⲧϫⲓ̇ ϩⲙⲟⲧ For the sense “obtain grace” cf. the colophons to BL Or. 6781 ll. 21-22 (PAThs Colophon 68); Pierpont Morgan M579 ll. 21-22 (PAThs Colophon 50).
8-10. There is an Arabic note to the right of the text.
11. ϣⲱⲛⲉ ⲛⲓ̇ⲙ : ⲙⲁⲣⲉϥⲗⲟ ⲛϭⲓ̇ ⲛⲇ̅ͅⲇ̅ͅ This phrase poses problems for translation; the subject of the verbal clause would naturally be taken as ϣⲱⲛⲉ ⲛⲓ̇ⲙ, but the following ⲛϭⲓ̇ suggests that it is ⲇ̅ͅⲇ̅ͅ. The prefixed nu may instead imply that this functions as an indirect object (in one of the non-standard uses of ⲛϭⲓ discussed in Crum CD 252a-b), but in this case we would expect it to resume a pronoun introduced before ⲛϭⲓ̇. We might instead translate “may every disease be healed in NN”, understanding perhaps that a prepositional phrase has been omitted after the verb and before ⲛϭⲓ̇.
