Description: | Seven Coptic magical formularies, written on leather, purchased by the British Museum in 1868. |
Acquisition: | Purchased from Robert James Hay in 1868, who perhaps acquired them in Thebes (Crum 1934: p. 51). |
Dating: | Crum (1934: p. 51) proposed a date of sixth to seventh century for the texts. Here we adopt the eighth to ninth century date to be proposed by Michael Zellmann-Rohrer in a forthcoming re-publication of the manuscripts based on radio-carbon dating (cf. Zellman-Rohrer 2022: p. 1051). |
Language/dialect: | All of the texts are written in Sahidic Coptic, with some non-standard features. |
Materiality/composition: | All of the manuscripts are written on leather; two (BM EA 10376 = M286 and BM EA 10414,a = M287) are rotuli; the others are sheets. |
Content: | The texts contain a wide range of magical texts for various purposes. |
